1

Thermography is Fancier than Flat-Print.

Tactile Sensation: The Touch Factor, Let’s talk about the "feel." Raised ink adds a three-dimensional element to printed materials. It’s like giving your degree or diploma a personality upgrade. When you run your fingers over raised ink, it creates an engaging experience that can leave a lasting impression. It’s like the difference between a regular handshake and a firm one; one is nice, but the other says, “I mean business!”

2

Raised ink is Visually Appealing and Durable

Bachelor of Business Degrees

It's like the fancy cousin to flat print, that shows up to the family reunion wearing a tuxedo and a top hat. If you’ve ever run your fingers over a business card or an invitation, and felt that delightful texture, you’ve experienced the magic of raised ink.  Also, it's Tougher Than inkjet, or laser degree prints. Raised ink tends to be more durable because it’s applied in thicker layers. This means it can withstand more wear and tear, without fading or smudging as easily as its flat counterpart.

3

"Lifted-Print" Quality has a Psychological Impact.

Let’s not underestimate the psychological aspect of touch. Studies have shown that the "sense of feeling" can influence our perceptions and emotions. When someone feels that raised texture on your degree or stationary, they subconsciously associate it with quality and care.

In the end, if you really want your degree or certificate to stand out in both appearance and feel, while leaving a lasting impression on anyone who comes into contact with them, then raise your glass (or diploma) to raised ink! Cheers to making every touchpoint count!

What Exactly is Raised ink, in Thermographic Printing?

Defining thermography printing

In simple terms: the process of raised ink print, is a fine white powder which is sprinkled onto wet ink. This powder "sticks" to written, or printed text or images, and is then heated. Once dry, it has a congealed, lifted feel.

The History and Uses of Raised Ink Printing

The rich history of  thermographic printing, dates back to the early 20th century.

Modern Raised ink Thermographic printing was developed as a cost-effective alternative to engraving. Raised ink printing gained popularity for its ability to produce tactile and visually appealing results without the need for expensive engraving plates. Over the years, it has found widespread use in various applications, particularly in the production of certificates, degrees, and diplomas. Educational institutions and organizations often utilize raised ink printing to enhance the perceived value and authenticity of these important documents.

  • Ancient Roots of Raised ink Printing:  Civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia, saw artisans use techniques like stamping and embossing to create impressions on materials such as clay, leather, metal, and papyrus documents.

  • Powder Lifted Text, Even in Fine TV Films:  "It's not salt," Even Tywin Lannister in the TV show "Game of Thrones, used a material called "pounce", typically fine sand or a powder made from cuttlefish bone, to give his letters appeal. The King's hand, then sealed with a hot wax stamp.

Can I Achieve a DIY Raised ink Print at Home?

Many individuals wonder if they can achieve a raised ink effect at home. "Yes, you can." Whether it be for your diplomas, certificates, or invitation prints, specialized equipment is not always needed if some quality can be sacrificed.  There are some DIY methods that can mimic this effect to a certain extent, for example:

  1. Use a true parchment vellum paper, or specialty paper with a coated surface.

  2. Use a fast printer that leaves wet ink once print is complete. Canon Pixma has a quality ink, and speed for this. Print on the fastest printing mode possible, ex: "plain paper, standard print" - or use draft selection.

  3. For 16-24 point text, use an "ultra-fine" embossing powder. sprinkle this over document "right away," and shake excess powder off, into a tray or bucket.

  4. Use a heat gun (blow-dryer is not hot enough) to visibly melt the powder to the ink.

Final Note:  Achieving the same level of quality, and durability, as professionally printed degrees or certificates, may be challenging without access to commercial printing services. Alternatively, you can buy your printed degree online, through DegreeMajor.

What is the Future of Fine Stationary Printing Processes?

The evolution of digital printing has significantly transformed the landscape of fine printing processes, leading to a gradual decline in the use of traditional methods such as letterpress. Locally, and online, we can now enjoy the ordering, and proofing process of our degrees, diplomas, and fine stationary in a fraction of the time it used to take.

Initially, letterpress printing was the dominant technique, characterized by its labor-intensive nature and high setup costs, which made it less accessible for smaller print runs. However, the advancements in technology, saw digital printing emerge as a more cost-effective and efficient alternative. It allows for on-demand printing with minimal setup time and lower costs per unit, additionally, digital printing continues to gain traction due to its environmental impact; it typically generates less waste and uses fewer resources compared to letterpress, which often requires extensive materials and chemicals for production. As a result, digital printing has not only replaced letterpress in many applications but has also reshaped the industry as it prioritizes efficiency, affordability, and sustainability.

For the raised effect of text and images, digital machines can apply ink directly to the surface of the paper, and many modern digital presses--can create dimensional effects using clear or specialty inks, such as "spot UV" which produced vibrant colors.
